Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) -Virtual Information Session
Alright. Hello everyone. Thank you so much for joining us today. We're going to allow our participants just a second to log in.
And we'll get started in a moment. Thank you again for coming.
If you're watching this as a prerecorded session, thank you for doing so.
Give me just a second here.
All right. We're going to go ahead and start. Uh, welcome. My name is John Radwanski, and I am the Associate Director for Graduate Admissions here at Stockton University. And I'm so glad that you're watching our session here. Today. I am joined with two of my colleagues from our nursing program, both the Master of Science and Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice, so MSN DNP programs here at Stockton University. And So what I'd like to do is just give you a quick rundown on how this will work for anyone who possibly joining us live.
You can feel free to use the chat feature located on the side of the screen if you have any questions. We do recommend waiting till the end of the session if you have any questions because more than likely we will try and answer all everything that you have going on in your mind throughout the presentation. But if you do have a question, pop it in there and we're happy to answer that. For anyone who's watching this pre recorded, we thank you again for doing so. And at the very end of the session we'll be sharing with you contact information so that if you have questions that you can reach out to us as well.
With those questions, the other thing that I wanted to just share with you is anyone who may be in an international student status not currently stateside in the United States. I do want to let you know that unfortunately at this time, the MSN and DNP programs are not currently accepting international applicants. So hopefully, maybe one day, but as of right now that is not a possibility. And so I want to just make that very clear for all of our participants that these programs again, are not accepting international applicants.
Alright, so without further ado, I want to turn things over to my amazing faculty. I'll have them introduce themselves to you, tell them, tell you a little bit more about who they are, and then share with you their amazing programs. So they're, they're Mary, I'm going to turn over to you.
Awesome. Thank you so much, Jane. It's great that you've turned in.
I'm Larry there Waffen. I'm the chair of the Masters of Science in Nursing program and I'm really excited to to share the amazing things we are doing here at Stockton University.
Doctor Patton.
Good afternoon. I'm Doctor Mary Pattenden, meet. I am Chair of the DMP program here at Stockton. Welcome. We hope that this presentation is helpful for you and we certainly hope that you decide on Stockton.
Awesome. So let's dive into our presentation here.
Let's talk a quickly about our mission as an institution and also as a program.
So the mission of the graduate Nursing program is to develop competent nurse practitioners or advanced practice nurses to practice in a culturally diverse and rapidly evolving world. So we really.
Uh, it highlight the idea of developing competent nurse practitioners and advanced practice nurses. Unfortunately they are a programs out there. When their students come out, they are not as competitive as they should be. We make this our mission and we are very proud that we have a curriculum that's very robust and.
That's a mindfully based and in that way we make sure that.
Our students, when they graduate, they come out as really competent.
Your clinicians.
To the university and the graduate nursing program, we are women responsive to the communities needs. We do not just develop programs or just do things just to do them, but we make sure that we assess our community to see what the community needs and to make sure that we supply the demand of our community and this is what we do here as an institution.
We independently independent experiential learning foster students to choose their education and future professional endeavors. We coach our students to make the right choice and and we support our students throughout. And of course, we embrace the universities guiding principles, vision, values and the strategic plans.
Not only as a program we have our vision, but everything that we do, we ensure that it's incorporated or it's it's drawn within the universities.
Project, mission and vision as a goal.
Doctor Patton.
Stockton has been around. The nursing program has been around since 1975. I am a proud alumni of Stocktons around the BSM program.
The MSN program was first launched in 1998 as you can see on the slide and then a postmasters FNP certificate followed in 2004. As of the fall of 2023, we will be offering the the MSN FNP degree.
Our pre licensure program launched in 2006. We partnered originally with Chatham in 2014 with their DNP program and then from there we launched our own DMP program in the fall of 2018. Our first graduates finished, they were all post MSN students finished in 2021 and then our first class of primarily post BSN students, but there was one and post MSN student in that class.
UM graduated in 2022.
On the Accelerated program was launched in 2016. They're housed in Manhawkin and then again as I said before the the MSN degree, the FNP MSN will launch in the fall of 2023 and we are always looking to expand our programs as Doctor Ruffin said in response to the community needs Doctor Ruffin.
Thank you so much. So this slide talks about a broad career options. Why do you want to become an Advanced Practice Nurse or a nurse practitioner, whether it's an FNP, a Family Nurse Practitioner or an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or?
We are here for you basically so.
So the nurse practitioners, they work in a variety of setting and some of the things that the NP does will is to we assess, we diagnose and we treat acute and chronic illnesses and especially in primary care There is a huge demand for advanced practice nurses to step into primary care and we are very proud of.
Our program right now and yes, those students, they really get great jobs. There's a really hot job market out there for nurse practitioners.
And in fact, our FNP's and AG PC NPC's, they practice in primary care setting practice. Some of them practice in urgent care centers, in clinics, private practices. Some of them make house calls, see patients in their homes and some of them work for insurance companies where they may do Wellness visit.
So there are many different options as you choose to become an advanced practice nurse.
So with the program, we offer a cohort model with small class sizes. You know, we are very proud that we have the ability to sit down and have real conversation with our students. We are never too busy for our students and the small class size means that you have.
Individualized attention and we are very proud about that. We have a core group of full time faculty that we are really.
Vested into our program and we do whatever it takes to make sure that not only that the program equals, but also to make sure our student succeed. Because once you become our student, your success is our success, and we take a full pride into that and our classes. One of the things that really make us a unique is the fact that.
We understand with graduate nursing education it can be really difficult for some of for for nurses to be.
One in back and forth into the classroom. That's why we make our program on online blended or a type of program where it's online synchronous. They are zoom. So that means we are not an online program where you sit down, you do your own things, you have guidance by the faculty and you have class time. The only difference is that.
Instead of driving to to school.
You can attend class via Zoom while they're in your home, and usually our classes are from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the graduate program because we recognize that a lot of nurses work in the morning and.
So that gives them time to make it home and to be ready to start class. But we are also pretty flexible to work with with with our student. And although right now our classes are like 6 to 9, actually I'm teaching 11 course right now where we change it to 5:00 to 8:00 because all the students in the class.
Prefer if 5 to 8. As a result, you know, we make sure that we need need we meet the needs of our students. So again so we listen to our students and and to make sure that we meet their NZ visual needs.
So the nursing aid tracks that we currently offers, as Doctor Patton mentioned earlier, we have the Adult Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, which you can obtain as a, as an MSN or as a.
A postmaster certificate. So that would be without the the MSN. If your goal is to pursue your Masters of Science in nursing, yes, you can do the Adult Joint Theology Primary Care track.
And if you are already an adult nurse practitioner, because there used to be a certification for adult nurse practitioner which has retired, but some of the nurse practice, some of the adult nurse practitioners are going back to school to obtain their adult and J ontology nurse practitioners. So we we have that available to you as well or if you had a masters degree.
In nursing or let's say it was in nursing education, you want to pursue your nurse practitioners or it was in a Masters in nursing administration or or or nursing informatics. So you want to become a an adult practitioner. Yes, we have that postmaster certificate action for you. So it's very similar to the family nurse practitioner, those same options that we talk about and also.
We have the doctor of nursing practice trial.
For those who want to do, if you want to do a ABBSN.
To DNP. So we have those options available to you as well. So as I said, I mean we are pretty flexible and we make sure that we make the program attractive to our students. We do have some other options coming down the down the the, the, the world. We are discussing currently about an acute care nurse practitioner track because we know there are many people who work in the hospital.
And who would prefer to be nurse practitioners in the hospital? So these are acute care nurse practitioners. So we are currently working on a track right now, although it's not.
Or but it's not completed yet, but we are still working and also we are working on a psych mental health nurse practitioner track. So as you listen to to this, you know if these are your goals, you can really e-mail us and and check back with us later so that we can keep you abreast as to when these tracks are open.
We are proudly.
Accredited by the AC Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Cle. So yes, we are nationally recognized and we are very proud of that.
And having that acquisition really allow us students to to sit for their certification by examination.
And uh, currently with nurse practitioners, there are two men.
The certifying bodies you have the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, also called a NP and the American Nurses Credentialing Centers also called ANC. So yes, so we are fully accredited in program.
So with clinicals, I know a lot of times students have questions about clinical.
Uh, we work very closely with our students to make sure that.
You are placed for your clinical there are schools where you have to find your own clinical placements. While we really encourage students to find their clinical placements, but we we really work with you to help you get placed. We have a number of.
Of.
The institutions that we have affiliations with that we we can make arrangements with to make sure that you are placed for your clinicals so currently.
Adult practitioner track, UH is 750 clinical hours, it's a 46 credit track and the family nurse practitioners is a 770 per clinical hours and it's 50 credits. And both of these we have two options. If you want to take a fast track option to get it done within 24 months, we welcome.
That we have available to you, but if you want to take this lower path to do it in 33 months, we also.
We would work with you to make sure that you you can choose that option. So yes, we have a 24 month and a.
And it's 33 month options, so that doesn't mean they are a part times actually at stacked on graduate education, as long as you take six credit you are considered a full time so.
These these.
The classes these options are 6 to 9 to 10. Credits are basically.
All right.
Now some of the other things we do, we have on on campus intensive so.
With on campus intensive, we recognize that.
The fact that our students are.
Mary Padden
01:18:43 PM
The slide is not advancing, Jenn
Uh not coming to campus that frequently because the the program is an online blended program. We meet on zoom so we have the on campus intensive when we have students come on campus to it's it's like a conference where you are here.
For two to three days in back-to-back and we do that once a semester and once you start taking courses like advanced self-assessment and moving into the clinical courses that's when we make that happens. So we have the objective structured clinical examination like ASKIS as you can see in this in in the pictures here where students.
We don't go into the into the the office really seeing patients. So we have some types of simulations going on where you have a.
Mary Padden
01:19:45 PM
I am not seeing what Larider is seeing on the slides
Someone who is sick and you are you going to see a that person. All the things that we we we we we we we thought in the in the current class so basically this is where you're going to put it all together and for advanced self-assessment we have a clinical day where you we all come together here to practice and of course with advanced self-assessment we do a lot of the.
Clean clinical skills via a.
Video recording to make sure that you master those skills and we work very closely with our students but also with these Askis. You know they are very, very important and the students really love the the clinical experience, although it can be nerve wracking for some students, but you know we make sure that we prep our students to.
To know that you know, to to be able to to perform these skills in an effective manner because you know the fact that students are being observed sometimes, you know, that's anxiety producing and we recognize that and we make sure that we work with our students on this.
So right here while we have on campus intensives, so we eat the pictures you see in here. This is one of our workshops, the Sichuan and wound closure, our workshops where it's really hands on clinical experience This the these are students in the adult three clinicals where they are learning how to suture wounds basically and we have the pig.
Mary Padden
01:21:29 PM
Okay. Working now.
It's where, OK, the pig feet really, you know the the, the texture of the pigs feet is really close to humans is skin. So that really provide a wonderful clinical experience for our students. So yeah, so with hands on when we come on campus it's really, really, really a hands on our clinical experience.
Doctor Biden.
Would you mind advancing the slide for me? For some reason I'm having trouble getting these slides advanced.
I will do that, yes. Now at the NPC project and you see that.
OK.
Now I'm not seeing it. I don't know why my mind keeps freezing here, but it's not. It's not. I'm seeing the wind closure 1.
OK.
That's OK. I can talk about the DMP off the top of my head.
Uh.
The DMP of There it is, Thank you Um, the DMP Project initiative. Our our DMP program is 27 credits. Not many DMP programs have that minimum credit limit. There are four main courses and then three project courses. Students who are working APN's post MSN students are welcome to do their projects at their work site. They just can't do their data.
Election during their clinical hours, but they are welcomed and actually encouraged to do their projects at their work sites. Students receive 500 hour F APN. Students receive 500 hours from their MSN programs towards the 1000 hour clinical requirement for all DMP programs. And then the additional 500 hours are earned through the DMP courses and there are hours attached to each course and the DMP project courses. So there's really no.
Uh, problem with students achieving their clinical hours. Um students who are non APN students. Those post MSN students who are non APN students. We would need to do a gap analysis of your MSN clinical courses to see the number of hours that we might be able to apply towards the DMP project hours.
The total 1000 hours.
UM post BSN DMP students are will follow the MSN courses. So they'll follow and complete all of the 5000 level courses and then when those are completed actually, they may also be able to incorporate a course here or there during their MSN courses and then they can either finish and apply to graduate and sit for certification and finish the DMP as a practicing nurse.
Practitioner Or they may opt to follow all the way through. They can still sit for certification, but if they're really aiming for just the DNP degree and not the MSN and the DMP, they can sit for certification and then submit to the certifying body for their certification and practice after they earn their TM DMP degree. So there's several different options for students, and we work with students according to what?
Your needs are.
Doctor Ruffin.
OK.
Thank you.
I hope you're seeing that. Why Stockton, UM, so why Stockton?
Can you see that Doctor Patton?
I'm not seeing it, but um, I'm not quite sure why these keep freezing on my end, but.
OK.
All right.
So why?
These.
Are you saying that?
Yeah.
Jen, are you able to see the slides?
Can you hear me?
Yes.
Um, so.
Let me I'm going to log out and log back in again really quickly. That seemed to fix it that time. Just wait one second.
OK, well, sorry, we have some technical difficulties.
So.
No.
There we go.
Go ahead.
There's people now. It's good.
OK.
Go ahead, Doctor, Pardon wise, Docton.
Ohh OK I forgot that was my slide.
Once again, ask Doctor Ruffin had shared with you. We do have very small class sizes students, once they begin, they pretty much follow the same cohort. However, if for instance, the student enrolls full time and then decides they want to go part time, you're welcome to, you know, make those adjustments in your curriculum as it fits your needs. The tuition is very reasonable according to all of the New Jersey institutions that the state universities.
They do have some unique partnerships in the with some of the institutions in the area that we contract with. The faculty are very reachable and readily available to students. And as Doctor Ruffin previously said, you can either opt for the 24 month or the 33 month option for the MSN program. For the DMP program, you actually couldn't complete the.
The DMP within two years if you take two courses in the fall, 2 in the.
Spring and then the DNP project courses in the summer, fall, spring. So that is an option or going part time. You can slow it down a little bit and just take one class this semester as well.
Um Doctor Ruffin shared with you the slides on the on campus Intensives and those take place within the MSN curriculum of the DMP students really designed their own clinical initiatives. So we you know it's up to you however you want to do your project. You design your clinical hours around your project and as we mentioned before it's an online synchronous asynchronous program. So most of the.
Professors schedule their classes so that they meet face to face online synchronously one week, and then it's an asynchronous class the following week. But it's the clinicals that are face to face and the on campus intensives that are actual face to face classes.
Can you advance to the pass rate slide please?
Yes.
OK, Frozen again but that's OK. Our our graduates we have 100% pass rate in both the ANC and the A&P certification exam. So our graduates do very well. They're also mentored through two before they sit for certification. So we're we're very proud of our our pass rate for our graduates.
Umm.
And then, um, Jennifer, you can probably take over on IT applications and admissions.
Gladly.
Ohh there we go.
Now we don't know why we're having that lag. We've never had that happen before. We will reach out to our.
Partners who provide this webinar feature and and ask them later but.
So to go over the admission process just very quickly, this is can. This can all be found on our website. But if you'd like to take notes, you're more than welcome to. But there is specific admission requirement for every single one of our programs that's stocked in and each program has different admission requirements. So it's really important just to be very.
Familiar with each of those, so I'm going to go through these. So first there is the direct entry option and for the direct entry there are specific requirements for GPA and prerequisites and all of that that can be found on our direct entry website. And that is only for Stockton students. Direct entry, it just allows you to have a shorter application process and it takes away some of the the features. You won't have to do letters of recommendation, all these different components and.
Believes the $50 application fee, but again, that is only for Stockton students and it's only after a certain number of credits have been completed and only available for one year after completion of the degree.
Next, uh, so there is a $50 application fee for those to apply for the MSN and DNP. Once you've paid that application fee, you're able to actually see the essays that are involved. There's an essay involved for every one of our applications here at Stockton and that will populate once the application fee has been submitted.
There is additional materials for this specific program. For these specific programs, proof of licensure to practice is one of them, so you'll want to make sure you have that handy. Anything that you will upload to the admission application should be uploaded in a PDF format. So the next item, or excuse me, the not we're going to jump down to item number seven, which is the resume really important that is uploaded in a PDF format, so licensure resume all PDF formats.
Letters of recommendation are also required. Those are very simple. All you need to have is your recommenders e-mail address. So what you'll do is when you do the application, you'll input their name and their e-mail address and it'll auto populate and send them the materials that they need to complete electronically. So it makes things very easy. We do recommend that you make sure that you tell your recommenders that you're adding their e-mail, you ask them, notify them, let them know that that's coming and then go ahead and you can put their e-mail address in.
And then lastly, official transcripts. And these need to be official transcripts from every institution. You took college level courses at dual degree classes if you went to a two year institution, a Community College if you attended another four year institution. So not just the school you may have graduated from, but every single school where you took any any college level courses. And we do need to have official transcripts.
You need to have those sent to us. The e-mail address to send those is grad school at stockton.edu or you can e-mail or have them sent regular mail to us. And that e-mail address or excuse me mailing address is on our website, but that does take a little bit of time. It can take anywhere from one to two weeks to receive those, so keep that in mind. We're going to talk about the timeline for the due dates for the application, so you'll want to make sure you do that. But again, making sure that you send all official transcripts many students.
Contact us and say I can't load my transcripts to my application. No, we have to do that for you. So please make sure you have those sent to us and we're happy to load them. But again, they have to be official transcripts.
Next, just the admission process Again, you must have a baccalaureate degree in a BSN nursing degree for for the program.
And then you also have to meet the GPA requirements. So really critical that you're looking at that in detail, both the cumulative GPA and, you know, looking at all of your coursework in its totality.
Next, completion of the following prerequisite undergraduate courses is necessary. Health Assessment, Nursing, Research and Statistics. And just so that you know as well, if you are still completing those courses, you can still apply for the program. You would just need to note that those courses are in progress and as soon as those courses are finished, we would need an additional official transcript. And that goes for any of your courses. If you're still finishing your undergraduate degree, you can apply for the program and then you would just.
Commit to us at the end of your your final semester.
The final grades for those courses. So we would need an additional official transcript showing the conferral of your degree or the completion of your degree. So for example, right now it's April. You may be finishing courseworks for your undergraduate degree in walking and and conferring your degree in May. You can still apply right now. You'll send us another additional transcript once you've completed your degree.
And then lastly, proof of current RN license in the state of New Jersey. And again, all of these materials need to be uploaded in a PDF format.
And it has frozen on me again. Ohh, there we go. Alright, priority deadlines. Very important that you keep in tune with these deadlines, these priority deadlines. Although we can accept applications after these deadlines, these deadlines are going to give you the opportunity to apply for graduate assistantships, scholarships and allow you priority registration for courses, allowing you to know your schedule. We do have a number of folks as it was.
Mentioned are working full time and taking courses in these programs. And so by abiding by these priority deadlines that allows you to register for courses and have your schedule and be able to map things out with your personal life, which is really important in trying to balance work, family, school and everything else. So that's why these priority deadlines are set in place.
Alright, I'm going to turn it back over to Larder and Mary for the last few slides and then we'll wrap up with questions.
And these are photos of our 2022 graduates. The DMP students are on your right and our MSN students are on the left. We do not have an issue with any of our graduates finding employment. And in fact, many of the graduates end up being hired by these sites where they did some of their clinical hours. So I think that speaks very well to both our students.
And the program.
Doctor Ruffin.
Yes. So I I think that almost concludes you. Any questions you have?
We will be happy to answer any questions you might have and yes, we are extremely proud of our students and we are extremely proud of the the clinical experience they receive and we really hope that you will consider Stockton and are we really look forward to to working with you.
Ah, Jen.
Thank you.
Thank you both so, so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge and and your passion for this program. We really appreciate it. For everyone who is watching, I want to share our contact information. If you have additional questions, please let us know. I'm not currently seeing any additional questions in the chat, so we will conclude here. Again, thank you all for taking the time to watch our presentation and thank you to to Wonder and Mary for presenting. We really value your time and we look forward to seeing all the applications rolling in.
We hope everyone everyone has a wonderful day and we'll talk with everyone soon. Take care. Bye bye.
Thank you.
OK. Thank you.
Bye.
No.
