All right. Welcome, everyone.
I see. We have folks entering the room. We'll have it start in just a second. There we go. Fantastic.
All right. Welcome. My name is Jen Radwanski, and I'm the associate director for graduate admissions here at Stockton University. I'm so glad that you could all join us. We are here today to talk more about our master and public health program, our one of our newest programs here at Stockton. I am joined by my colleague Stephanie Griffin, who's going to tell you more about the program. Stephanie is the program chair. But before we do that, I want to just give you a quick couple of housekeeping items for those of you who are joining us live, we do have a chat.
Teacher, you'll see that listed next to the participant list. If you have questions throughout the presentation today, please feel free to drop those into the chat and we will take questions and answers at the end. More than likely, we will hopefully get to all your questions as we go through the presentation today. So maybe wait to post them in the chat towards the end, but get those questions prepared. And again, Stephanie and I will be happy to answer all those questions at the very end. If you're joining us virtually, we will provide you with contact information so that you can reach out to us.
Those questions after you watch this presentation. So don't don't worry about that too, if you're watching a recording. And then lastly, if we do have any guests who are joining us who are international students or maybe you're an international student watching the recording, I do want to share with you that at this time, the masters of Public Health program is not accepting applications for international students that is under review. But I just want to let you know that for this upcoming cycle, that's where we're at. So without further ado, I'm going to turn things over to Stephanie.
Thank you so much for joining us and and and sharing more about your awesome program.
Thank you for the introduction, Jen, and for having me here today. The faculty, staff, and current Stockton Public health students are excited to share information about our MH program with the audience here today.
And I look forward to answering any questions you may have at the end of my brief presentation. So with that, I'll go ahead and get started.
I would like to begin by introducing a subject near and dear to my heart. If you're new to the field of public health, it might help to start with the definition. So what is public health? Public health can be defined as the art and science of preventing disease and promoting quality of life by working with communities, private and public organizations, and society at large. Unlike a clinical model of healthcare, public health focuses on protecting the health of populations, identifying root causes and societal influences.
On health and engaging stakeholders to promote greater well-being and vitality of all who are potentially impacted.
The Stockton Master of Public Health Program will provide students with the foundational skills, education, research, experience and service in public health settings, including state and county health departments, nonprofit agencies, hospital population health offices, Wellness centers, and academic institutions. The American Public Health Association describes the diverse setting and sectors of our economy open to public health majors and practitioners from conducting scientific research.
Educating about health people in the field of public health work to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy. That can mean vaccinating children and adults to prevent the spread of disease or educating people about the risks of alcohol and tobacco. Public health set safety standards to protect workers and develop school nutrition programs to ensure kids have access to healthy food.
Public health works to track disease outbreaks, prevent injuries and shed light on why some of us are more likely to suffer from poor health than others.
The many facets of public health include speaking out for laws that promote spoke smoke, free indoor air and seatbelts, spreading the word about ways to stay healthy, and giving science based solutions to problems.
Public health saves money.
Improves our quality of life, helps children thrive, and reduces human suffering.
Public health professionals serve in a wide variety of settings across many sectors of our economy to advance and promote the health of the public. Some examples include hospitals, healthcare first responders, state and local health departments. You will find public health professionals working in schools as health educators. They are in academic settings, government agencies, and private institutions working as scientists and researchers. They work alongside a diverse population of allied professionals, including social workers, nutritionists, community planners.
Epidemiologists, public health physicians and nurses, Occupational Safety and health professionals, sanitarians and public policy makers.
The Stockton MPGH is based on a collaborative interdisciplinary approach. We bring together clinical and non clinical aspects of prevention and improvement of health through societal efforts.
Our vision is healthy people thriving where they live, work, learn, play and worship. Graduates of our comprehensive evidence based program will serve people and communities and improve lives at the local, regional, national and global levels.
The mission of the Master of Public Health program at Stockton University is to promote the health of individuals and communities.
With an emphasis on HealthEquity and social justice, we develop public health practitioners and leaders who collaborate with, advocate for, and empower the communities they serve.
The MPH program prepares students to serve as evidence based practitioners and leaders in the dynamic and collaborative field of public health. The curriculum is based on the core competencies of public health. These include Biostatistics and epidemiology, environmental Health Sciences, health policy and management, social, social and behavioral sciences, communication and leadership, program planning and diversity, equity and inclusion. This is a 46 credit hour program. Courses are offered.
In an online or hybrid format, students may enroll full time or part-time.
Students are required to complete and applied practice experience or internship, which typically includes 200 contact hours with their internship supervisor. Students will be eligible to enroll in the applied practice experience after they have completed at least 21 credits within the MPH program. The applied practice experience provides real-world application of current issues and practices in public health and can take place in settings including community based organizations healthcare.
Agencies, academic settings, non governmental organizations or government agencies.
I am currently serving as the MPH program chair here at Stockton, and I have the pleasure of working with a tremendous team of faculty and staff who are dedicated to student success.
Out of the 11 faculty teaching in our MPH program, 8 our full-time faculty in our College of Health Sciences all have extensive academic and applied public health experience, working with diverse populations in a wide range of settings. We are so fortunate to have experts and esteemed professionals teaching in our program. But it is also important to note that our faculty are active researchers and scholars and public health. They have so much to share with our students, and they do so in a way that demonstrates Stockton's guiding principle of putting students.
The MPH program will seek accreditation from the Council and education for public health, or safe, the nationally recognized body that establishes the rigorous standards and oversight for public health programs and schools at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
See if accreditation will assure a full range of certification and employment opportunities are available to our students.
The accreditation process includes a multi level review and ensures we meet nationwide standards developed by public health practitioners and academics. We have designed our MPH program to meet the accreditation standards and are already working toward our initial application.
Stockton offers small class sizes and the flexibilities students need today to meet and balance all aspects of their busy lives. With online and hybrid courses offered either full time or part-time, students have a lot of control about the pace with which they move through the program. We offer competitive tuition rates compared to other MPH programs in New Jersey. Our program provides a well-rounded education that sets our graduates up for success as practitioners and leaders in public health.
Our faculty are supportive with the focus and dedication for student success.
The MPH program is new, so we don't yet have a track record of alumni success to share, but we are building on decades of student success in the Bachelors of Public Health program. In recent years, nearly 70% of alumni from our bachelor's program we're working in health related field in a variety of settings and over 25% were working on or had completed their graduate studies. Our current MPH students are moving forward in their public health careers already progressing in research and in public health practice.
The faculty in the Stockton Bachelors of Public Health Program recently put together this brief video about Stockton's program, and our alumni and I would like to share that with you now.
Our students are bright, engaged, and passionate about public health. We hope to count the participants in today's webinar among our community soon.
Many of our undergraduate students have achieved certification as a health education specialist. This certification promotes and sustains a credential body of professionals who have mastered the skills, responsibilities, and competencies of the health education profession.
The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing or uncheck, determines eligibility for becoming certified. We are working with this organization to ensure our MPH students, like our undergraduate students in public health, are eligible and ready to take this certification exam after completing their coursework here at Stockton.
Our admissions process is outlined here. The prerequisite requirements include students must have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
And successfully completed at least one undergraduate course in biology and one undergraduate course in statistics with a grade of B or higher. Interested students will complete the application, which includes an essay, 3 current letters of Recommendation, a current resume, and official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, including Stockton. We have rolling admissions with the priority deadline of July 1.
Stockton offers direct entry into some of our graduate programs, including the MPH with certain time restrictions and upon the recommendation of the graduate program coordinator.
Stockton students who meet the requirements outlined on our direct entry website do not need to complete a traditional graduate application for admission, and the office of Graduate Admissions will also waive the graduate application fee.
Our direct entry criteria are listed here. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and a program GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible for direct entry. There is a short list of required coursework to qualify for direct entry, including courses in biology, chemistry, and human anatomy. Prospective students will also submit a brief essay, 500 words or less, upon submitting their direct entry application, answering two questions about.
Public health and their future career goals.
Finally, faculty in the MPGH and Bachelors of Public health programs have started the process of applying for a dual degree that would allow eligible students to complete the Bachelors and Masters degree on an accelerated schedule, completing both degrees and 10 semesters. Please keep an eye on our website for more up-to-date information in the coming months about that exciting development.
That concludes my part of the presentation. Thank you so much for your time and attention. Now Jen and I are happy to take any questions.
My son, thank you so much for sharing about our new program here. And I think that it's really important for you all as our audience to understand that this is a new program. And so we're building this up and you can be a part of something really amazing. Stephanie has done some phenomenal work in getting our students up and running for their first year here at Stockton, and we would look forward to having you ask any questions that you may have about that. So we'll give you a couple of seconds to drop those questions into the chat and again, the application.
Is available on our website. If you do have questions, um, once you start looking at this or as you kind of process the information you've heard in the session today, please don't hesitate to reach out. You'll see our contact information on the slide there, but we're happy to do one-on-one sessions to talk through things further with you. You can also take a peek at our website so you hopefully, you know, you don't have to frantically write down all the information that was here on the admissions process. Again that is on our website too.
But if you do have additional questions, we're happy to help you on a, you know, on A1 on one basis too, um, instead of the public forum.
We'll give it just another second to allow people to to keep typing if they do have questions.
With that being said, Stephanie, I want to put you on the spot with a question I have for you. So knowing that you have been new to Stockton and new to this program, what's been your favorite part about teaching in this program this year?
I would say I've really enjoyed getting to know students both at the pH level and in our bachelor's population, because I'm actually fortunate enough to teach in both communities. So that's been a lot of fun. The students here are just warm, welcoming, kind. They're bright, they want their hunger hungry for information. They want that sort of.
Peter Oteh

I’m Oteh Peter from Nigeria, I want to find out about the conditions required for funding, does assistantships cover all graduate program expenses?
The skills and knowledge to move on with their careers that, you know, they look to me with sort of big eyes and say, you know, what is it that you have to tell me, which is really fun. So we're having a good time in my classrooms and I really enjoy. The campus is lovely. The faculty and staff are very welcoming and they've been that way to me. But I also hear that from students. And so it just seems like a very nice community here and I think I'm in my 6th month or something here at Stockton.
And so, so far so good. No complaints.
Awesome. Well, I'll share with my audience. With the audience.
I got a chance to sit in on one of Stephanie's classes just for the first little part for for for a variety of reasons. But I have to tell you, I was sitting there thinking ohh, I think it would be really fun to sit in your class. I think it was this, this is, this is great. And unfortunately.
Yeah, it was really, it was very engaging and it was great to see, you know, your students engage with you in that platform. And so that was awesome. So we do have a question from our audience and the question was regarding funding and assistantships. So that's a great question. And so I'll share with all of you that we do have opportunities for assistantships. We also have some small scholarships available. And if you're not a Stockton student coming in as a new student, you'd also have the opportunity to apply for one of our foundation.
Scholarships for your second year.
For the assistantships, it's hours worked equate to credits that you would get paid for. Every program has a different number of hours, but usually we see students doing maybe about 7 hours which equates to 3 credits. There is the opportunity to possibly do more, but again that that's based on the program opportunities for research and the the.
Activities that are going on, um, so those are a couple of the opportunities. It also because Graduate School is expensive, we do want to be very clear that it does probably require doing the fasfa, doing financial aid, applying for some loans. We do not have anything specifically that would cover the full tuition, but there are opportunities that you could apply for that would help pay for part of your, your experience here. So that's a great question.
I don't see any other questions from our audience. So with that being said, I'm just gonna just remind all of you. Don't hesitate to contact us again. Our contact information is on the screen there. You can also find it on our website. Stephanie, thank you again for presenting today and sharing about your new program here at Stockton. We are so excited to see it grow and develop and I wish all of you a wonderful day. Take care everyone.
