Welcome to our MSW Webinar! We will be starting momentarily. Feel free to drop any questions you may have in the chat, and we will do our best to address them during the presentation and/or immediately following our presentation. Thank you for being here!
For a few moments and then once I feel we have everybody here, we will get started.
We do have a chat feature for this webinar and we're going to be posting comments or any housekeeping items in there. So please make sure that you're monitoring the chat and then we're going to give you directions on asking any questions in the chat as well. But I'm going to give folks a few moments to to enter and then we will officially begin.
OK. So I guess we'll jump in. We'll do a little bit of a slow start. So those who are still wanting to join don't miss any information. Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Tara Williams. I am the Director of Graduate Admissions here at Stockton University. And I want to thank you for joining us for our Master in Social work, MSW Webinar. And we're going to, you know, really spend some time this afternoon going over.

Hello!
Our MSW program, I'm going to introduce our esteemed faculty member Doctor Mooney in a little bit so she can jump start our presentation. Just a couple housekeeping items. This is probably going to be about 30 to 40 minutes just to give you a time frame in case you have a hard stop at any point. If you have any questions, please feel free to use the chat feature and after the presentation we will do AQ and A and Doctor Moody and I will.
Tag team all of the questions.
To make sure everyone has their questions fully answered, we're also going to leave you with e-mail addresses in case you leave here and think of any questions that you may have.
Vipul Barot
11:02:32 AM
Good morning
At this point, I'm going to turn over the presentation to Doctor Loretta Mooney, who is a faculty member for our MSW program.
Vipul Barot
11:02:49 AM
My name is vipul barot
Thank you, Tara. I appreciate you having me today. Hi, everyone. My name is Loretta and I teach in the MSW program at Stockton. And so I'm here today on behalf of the faculty just to talk to you about what we have to offer. So welcome.
So before we go into our specific MSW program, I wanted to talk a little bit about the field of social work. So that you all have an understanding of what is social work and why would I want that as a career, right. So social works mean calling is to help people that are disadvantaged or marginalized, right? So marginalized just means that they are considered secondary or less than in the United States or or in the world. And so one of the really benefits of the social profession is that we adhere to what we call the code of ethics.
And there's a specific values and ethics that we are driven by as a profession and one of the biggest one is that we provide service to those in need.
And provide social justice and advocacy for people that are marginalized or oppressed in the United States and or worldwide. So that's really Our Calling. That's really our mission. So if that's something that appeases you, you're in the right space.
So what you do with social work with a degree in MSW and social work, there's it's it's a generalist degree, right? And So what that means is that you're really open to a broad array of career opportunities. Some examples are hospital social work, school social work, child welfare, International Development, community and grassroots grassroot empowerment strategies and work political advocacy.
Umm, social workers are in prisons, military, social work. And then of course you have clinical social work. And so the reason why that's important to demonstrate is that many social workers get into the field right, And we start practicing for a while and then we realize, you know what, I think I want to try something else and our degree in MSW does provide you with that flexibility.
Matthew Shaw
11:04:52 AM
Welcome again! Feel free to drop any questions you may have in the chat, and we will do our best to address them during the presentation and/or immediately following our presentation. Thank you for being here!
Samantha Matthews
11:05:00 AM
Are we able to print the slide show after the presentation
So some of the MSW faculty and staff that we have here at Stockton, this is a list of of their names and so and you can review the the the names as I'm talking. But the reason why I want to show you this is that it's a small faculty, right, Which is really beneficial at you as a student because we really provide one-on-one attention. Our classroom sizes are small. We have a wide range of research interests, right. So my research interests are in mental health and suicide. Doctor Barney's is international social work.
Matthew Shaw
11:05:42 AM
Hey Samantha! We could share the presentation with you if you'd like
Apostles is working with childhood trauma and diversity and equity, and then you can read some of the other interested research interest on the website. But that's just an example. We we run the gamut of different research interests. And that's good for you as an incoming student because you can then go to the faculty member and say, you know what I always wanted to do research on suicide prevention and we can possibly work together, right? Or I always wanted to do research on LGBTQ, which is Doctor Dunkle's specialty.
So that's just an important thing to remember.
Samantha Matthews
11:06:05 AM
I would love that.

So the history of Stockton and MSW program, so we've been offering classes in Atlantic City since 2009. And so we always say you can study beachside, right. So when you look out of our classrooms, you can literally see, see the ocean. So sometimes we do that just to get to a nice grounding technique to get us centered again, right, because it's a beautiful, it's a beautiful spot to see. And we also really appreciate working in Atlantic City because some of the populations in Atlantic City are marginalized and oppressed.
Groups and so we provide a lot of internships, a lot of volunteer opportunities, a lot of service opportunity right in Atlantic City. So we not only learn there, but we also practice there, which is a key, is a key factor in the social work profession.
So what's the purpose and aim of our program? Right. So our purpose and aim is to develop graduates who are leaders in the community and have a lifelong commitment to upholding human rights, respecting human diversity and working towards social justice. That's a key factor, right? So as social workers, we have a dual calling. A dual calling means we don't just help the individual in need, we do that, but we also work to advocate for the rights of all people, particularly marginalized and pressed. So we work at the micro level, we call that which is the individual group level. And then we work at the macro level, which is the large scale effort, effort in making sure that laws and policies.
Are fighting for equity among all groups.
John Pitale
11:07:34 AM
Can you email me the presentation as well? johnpitale@gmail.com

11:07:49 AM
Thanks!
So the MSW practice specialization at Stockton, it is to prepare students to work with diverse individuals, families and communities. And that's really a unique aspect of the MSW program. What that means is that not just one course, every single course that you take gets approved by the curriculum committee and it has to have articles, materials, assignments, lectures on how do you specifically work with a diverse group of people.
Right. And so all the course content has that peppered throughout it and that's really a unique feature of our program.
So what does the program look like? So we have a cohort model of small class sizes. So the biggest class size would maybe be approximately 22 at the most 24, right? So it's pretty small. You have one-on-one attention from faculty, it's a core group of full time faculty, faculty like I said earlier, right. So you'll have those core faculty members all the time, teacher courses. And so you really get to develop a nice relationship with the faculty members and I as a faculty member get to develop a nice relationship.
So the program classes are held on Monday evenings from 6 to 850 and that's a hybrid style. Hybrid style means that there are some classes that are face to face on the Atlantic City campus and there are some classes that are either virtual and or asynchronous. Asynchronous meaning that you do work on your own and then you talk about it when you come to class next.
Matthew Shaw
11:09:23 AM
Absolutely!
Wednesday evenings we have classes beginning at 4:30. You have your practical class from 4:30 till about 5:45 and then a 6:00 class to 8:50 and then on Saturdays it is classes from 8:15 into 245 which an hour with an hour break. And we we chose that particular core structure or program structure because we found that many students are working students.
And so in addition to your practicum, in addition to core sizes.
Julissa Ramirez
11:09:34 AM
Can you email me presentation jramirez@chsfnj.org
Courses. We felt that it was really best to have evenings and Saturday classes so that you could also have the ability to work.
Kelsey Lewis
11:09:58 AM
I would really appreciate that as well! lewisk15@go.stockton.edu
Samantha Matthews
11:09:58 AM
Do all the classes take place at the Atlantic City campus or the Pomona campus?
Matthew Shaw
11:09:59 AM
We will share the slides with all attendees later today
If you if you're able to jog the juggle both those things, the curriculum has your core courses, right? So the courses that everybody has to take, and then you have electives and then you have your practicum component. So your core courses are courses that everybody will take. They're specialized clinical courses or specialized policy and advocacy courses. They're specialized research courses.
Julissa Ramirez
11:10:13 AM
Thank you!
And then you have electives that you get to choose, right. So there's three electives in your second year. If you're a traditional student that doesn't have a bachelor's degree in social work or if you're a have a bachelor's degree in social work and you get admitted for advanced standing, that means you have one year in the program. So that year is when you take your electives, there's one elective in the fall semester, there's two electives in the spring semester and you really get to decide what kind of electives that you want to take. We offer array of clinical.
Electives, for example, suicide prevention, intervention, psychopathology.
Matthew Shaw
11:10:47 AM
Classes take place on the Atlantic City Campus
Matthew Shaw
11:11:06 AM
MSW Program classes are held on the following days:
Monday evenings (hybrid style): 6:00 p.m. -8:50 p.m.
Wednesday evenings beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday morning/afternoon from 8:15 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. with one hour break provided for lunch.
All classes are held at Stockton’s Atlantic City campus. Practicum work must generally be done in the daytime during the work week. Additionally, a practicum seminar will be held every other week in the late afternoon hours on Wednesdays.
We also have clinical supervision. We also have a clinical elective on working with substance use. We also have one on CBT cognitive behavior therapy. We have also another one on trauma. So there's a bunch of clinical electives that you that you can pick from. So I also wanted to upload kind of an example of what the curriculum looks like. So this is an example of an advanced standing student. Again, advanced standing means that you have a bachelor's degree and you were admitted because you met these qualifications to the advanced standing and so that means you have one year in the program.
And see, there's some just examples of the courses that you'll take. So to give you kind of an idea of what to expect, So cultural competence and cultural humility, which is really important to our program.
Social work research, specialized social work practice practicum, and then you're electives.
The other thing that's really important to note is that we are accredited by CSWE. So CSW is the Council on Social Work Education. They're a national organization that's accredited social work programs across the United States. The reason why that's important for you to know is that if you one day think about or expect to get your license and social work.
You have to have come from a graduate program that CSW accredited. So we are nationally recognized and we are accredited. So that means you are licensed eligible.
So if you're wondering what that means is to have a license, right. So that's really important that social work fields in some states like for example New Jersey, you can't practice clinically without the license, right. There are some jobs that you can practice without a license. It depends on what kind of job you get into. But the first kind of licensure step is an LSW, right? So what you need is an MSW from an accredited program like we are. And then you take an examination, you pay a fee and then you have an LSW.
And then for New Jersey, they also consider the Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which is the LCSW, right. And so that means you also have the MSW from an accredited program. You have to first have gotten the LSW and then you need 3 hours of supervised counseling. So three hours of clinical work with a person who's already has an LCSW and then you need 12 hours of course work focused on clinical social work. And so Stockton's program does have courses that can work towards.
Your 12 hours of course work from an MSW.
Stacey Ramos
11:13:26 AM
Are those hours for full time? What about part time?
Julissa Ramirez
11:13:34 AM
Does the advanced standing offer part time?
So our elective tracks, so remember how I said you can take 3 electives in your second year or it's your first year of your advanced standing. There's two kind of ways that you can go, right? So you can get an elected track in leadership and Management, which means that you really focus on how do you lead and manage social work organizations or you can get an elective tracking clinical social work, right. So if your goal is to practice clinically, you can take all your elective courses in Clinical Social Work and then when you graduate, you'll have a specialization in Leadership and Management or Clinical Social Work.
The other thing to note is some students come in and say I don't really know if I want either or, which just means you can take a variety of electives and not necessarily take an elective track. That's OK too. That's up to what you're interested in.
So are we have different kind of options, right. So we have full time options and we have part-time options, right. So you can if you're an advanced standing students that means that you have a bachelor's degree in social work and you meet the qualifications and now you can can finish the program full time in one year. But we also have an advanced standing part time program which takes two years. There are some students and say listen an MSW programs a lot of work which we all know, right? Plus I have my job plus you'll have to do a practicum.
Emily DeNote
11:14:35 AM
How would classes work for a student who has no background in social work? I will have my BA in literature but I want to get my MSW.
Right in the field, plus taking care of children, elderly, parent, there's a lot of things that are going on people's life. So part time option is also really helpful if you feel like that would make make life easier or make you comprehend the material battle because you can devote time to it. Because it takes two years as opposed to one year, we offer you the advanced ending part time position. We also have the traditional full time, which means you are coming in with a different kind of undergraduate degree, not social work.
Alex Mazzo
11:15:20 AM
I also have a similar question as Emily, I have a Bachelor's in Global Media & Communications, but am looking to get my MSW. Would any pre-requisite classes be required?
You can do that full time for two years, but there are many students who take our traditional part time program, which is well, you'll be done in three years. We have that has been increasing. We started with like five or six. We're now up to 22 students in the part time students. It's a part-time program and students like that because they can pace themselves and they can do things that are outside of school that they need to do, which we understand.
Diana Madrid
11:15:54 AM
If I decided I could not handle full-time, could I go to a part-time schedule?
The next thing I wanted to just point out is that in addition to all the other things we have to offer, we also have an MSW alliance, right, which is kind of like the student club but for graduate program. And there's an E board, a board that that of students that run the organization with a faculty advisor and they do tons of different activities in Atlantic City. We did a rally to support Ukraine. We donated.
Donations to the AC Atlantic City rescue missions.
Julissa Ramirez
11:16:21 AM
Can you please share how the part time schedule would look like?
And they also in 2022 won the Student Involvement Award, right, Which just means we did. They did. Really. They're the ones who do it. They did. The students did so much work in the community that they are awarded a big, a big award, 2022 Student Involvement Award. So feel free if you come to Stockton, you can join or maybe be a member of the E board.
The last thing really is to talk a little bit about the alumni, right? So we've graduated almost 500 MSW program MSW Professionals to date. Our alumni come into various settings and positions every year. We have the alumni come back in the spring semester to talk to our current students network, talk about job openings, talk about how they got their license, how they network to get the job that they had, And students really love that event.
I thought maybe it would be good for you to hear from the alumni directly, so I have a video that I want you to watch.
As soon as I can get it. Hold on.

Advanced Standing is an accelerated MSW program that enables students to complete their MSW degree in one year. Stockton offers advanced standing to applications who have completed a baccalaureate degree in social work from a program that is accredited by the council on social work education
I hope that helps you understand a little bit about all the good things that our alumni are saying.
Matthew Shaw
11:20:16 AM
https://stockton.edu/graduate/socialwork.html
So why Stockton? So you might think, OK, so this is all great, but let's summarize why Stockton, right. So we have small class sizes. We have a cohort model, which just means you'll gain valuable friendships and support through peers. One of the biggest things I hear from students is I couldn't have made it without these XY and Z, right? So students really come together and they work on assignments together, they study together, they review for exams together. So that's really important. We also have competitive tuition calls compared to other MSW programs in New Jersey.
Stacey Ramos
11:20:45 AM
I can’t hear anything
We have this unique specialization of working with diverse individuals, families and communities. We have supported supportive faculty with diverse range of research interest. There's this part time option that you could take advantage of and then we work in the community, right? So we teach, we learn and provide service in Atlantic, in Atlantic City.
Aleyshka Barbosa
11:21:12 AM
I was having some internet connection trouble but I am back in!
So what's the admissions process? Right. So what you need is a bachelor's degree BSW for advanced standing. And if you don't have that, that's OK, we can, we can, we can, you can apply for the traditional program, then you need a completed application and it includes 3 different essays. So. And then one question about language, right. So be prepared for that. You have to have a cumulative GPA with three-point O3 letters of recommendation. And So what we're looking for in your recommendation letters is faculty that you've worked with.
If you have a BSW, we want someone to speak about your internship experience, right? So either your practicum coordinator or your supervisor at your internship.
Your resume and then it's also rolling admissions, which means we we admit students on an ongoing basis, right, But you have up until March 15th to apply.
Brittany Biglin

Thank you so much, Doctor Mooney for the presentation. I was monitoring some of the questions in the chat and thank you to Matt in our office who's been working the chat as well and and answering some of the questions there. Some of the common themes I see through the chat folks have been asking what if I didn't major in social work? That's OK. This program does not have any specific prerequisites that you would need, the only prerequisite which I'm sure most people have.

As a business student with Bsc. In Business administration can l apply for this course because am really interested in Social work
Is a foundation in the liberal arts, 24 credits of liberal arts. You know that's on your transcript. That's common with most state institutions, most accredited institutions, you know, most have a liberal, you know, studies background. So that that is really the only prerequisite. So if you were a business major, communications major, it's OK, you can apply for our MSW program. The only difference is you would be applying for the two year traditional.

If you have a Bachelor's in social work, you would be applying for the one year advanced standing. So that's the difference. But any major, any background you can apply for our social work program. Doctor Mooney touched on the different essays that we have for our program. If you need, I know some folks like to type out their essay in Microsoft Word 1st and hand it off to someone for a review. So that's my recommendation when it comes to your essays, the.
Matthew Shaw
11:23:39 AM
Graduate Credits and Fees are available in the above link, this is current Fall 2024 pricing
There is one of the essays is on the website. The rest of them are in the actual application. Once you submit your application, you will have access and you will be able to see all of the essays. And again, my recommendation is typing them into Microsoft Word and then having someone review it before you officially upload it to your application. The deadline is March 15th for admission to our Fall 2024 cohort.
Stacey Ramos
11:24:24 AM
Matthew can you please email me session I was having problems & missed some things.
There have been folks applying and accepted and then you know, haven't enrolled yet but are, you know, confirmed to begin for the fall. So as Doctor Mooney said, it is rolling admission. The quicker you get everything in, the quicker you will receive a decision. But the actual deadline for for completing your application is March 15th, so please make sure that you get everything in by the deadline.
Samantha Matthews
11:24:36 AM
By fall 2024, you mean September 2004, correct?
Matthew Shaw
11:24:38 AM

Information about tuition and fees and all of that is right on our website. We break it down per credit, the social work program for the one year program is a 30 credit program, 15 credits per semester. And then for the two year traditional, it is a 60 credit program. So essentially the one year you're doing 15 and 15, the two year you're doing 4 semesters of the 15, so it breaks down to be 30 and 60.
Alex Mazzo
11:25:09 AM
If I could also be emailed the info session too I would greatly appreciate it! amazzo22@gmail.com -- I appreciate all of the information, and best of luck to everyone looking to pursue their masters!
Respectively. So then you can go to the finance information and just figure out what the price per credit is and then you will you know have your total.

Are the internships paid/unpaid?
Unless you go for part time, right? So part time. There's part time, there's part time.
Samantha Matthews

September 2024
So yes, that's a very good point. So if you're part time, that curriculum worksheet is on there too. And then you can kind of maneuver and see exactly what the price breakdown is going to be. But if you go to the financial information, we break it down per credit. You can go to the various curriculum worksheets that are on the website and then you can, you know, do basic math and then figure out what your total is going to be per semester. We offer graduate assistantships.
Here at Stockton, the application for that is. You'll find it on your, you know, MSW application.
Matthew Shaw

https://stockton.edu/graduate/documents/MSW_CW_Bulletin_2023-2024.pdf
What a graduate assistantship is, is you can essentially work in the social work program or work here in graduate admissions. Instead of getting a paycheck, you'll be paid in tuition credits. It's taken right off the top of your bill, so it's not even like you paying. You get reimbursed, it's taken right off the top of your bill. So, for example, if you're approved for three credits of graduate assistantship, you would be required to work.
A certain number of hours a week.
Crispina Lawson
11:26:26 AM
Can’t hear please
Depending on how many credits you earn and then let's say you know, you earn 3 credits, 3 credits of tuition is taken right off the top of your bill as a discount. So it's a really great program. It puts some things that you can add on your resume as well as you know alleviate some of that tuition costs. We also have scholarships here at Stockton that you can apply to. Once you're here, you can apply for the foundation scholarships. So yeah, so and you'll see all that in the finance portion.
Julissa Ramirez
11:27:12 AM

How are we placed for the practicum hours each semester?

Part time curriculum can be seen on the program page
And Matt is keeping up. I'm looking at the chat. Matt's keeping up with all of the questions in the chat. If you want to see the curriculum for the full time, part time, all of that.

The MSW program offers a part-time option to the generalist program. This option will only be made available to those taking the generalist 60 credit program curriculum. Those students wanting to complete the part-time option will take 60 credit hours over the course of 3 years instead of two. The number of part-time seats will be limited. Those not admitted to the part-time option may still be offered seats in the generalist two-year program
You're going to go to Stockton Edu back slash graduate back slash social work dot HTML, click on curriculum and then you can see all the breakdown for what full time looks like, what part time looks like. And then if you need like an exact breakdown of the schedule, then you would have to go out to the schedule of courses on the registrar's website and see exactly what the schedule is. It does change semester by semester.
You know, so you could see when the classes are available.
But feel free. Feel free to please e-mail us after this if you have any more questions.
Doctor Mooney, would you like to? Any final words?
No. OK. So no more questions.
We covered them all, huh?
