Hello everyone. Thank you so much for joining us today for our virtual information session on the Masters of Arts and Instructional Technology. We appreciate you joining us or watching this at another point as one of our recorded links, I am joined here by my colleague Dr Doug Harvey, who is the program chair for the MIT program. And without further ado, I am going to turn things over to him to share a little bit more information about this program. I didn't introduce myself. I'm Jen radwanski. I am the.
With the director for graduate admissions here at Stockton and I will be joining you at the end to help with any Q&A, but at this time, I'm going to turn things over to Doctor Harvey.
Thanks Jen. So my name is Doctor Douglas Harvey. I am a professor here at Stockton and our instructional technology program and I'm currently the program chair.
And let me just explain a little bit about the program and you know what the field is. Instructional technology is really about teaching and learning.
Connected to technology. So if you're somebody that really likes to learn or you're big on teaching.
And you enjoy doing that, and you'll enjoy your worth working with a lot of different kinds of folks that have a lot of different expertise.
Then we can we can help you figure out how to take technologies and apply them to to those teaching environments.
You know, back when I started out in this field, it was all about the, the Internet because the Internet was new in in in the 90s. Before that they talked about you know, slide projectors and film strips and film projectors and videos. But the Internet really changed things a lot in terms of what we do. And then and then of course then we added things like cell phones and.
Cloud technologies and all these different things and online video like we're doing right now.
Became a big thing, especially during the recent years.
So this field is really kind of pulling together a couple of different things. We're pulling together learning psychology. We're pulling together technology tools. We're pulling together teaching and learning.
And so if you're somebody that kind of likes that sort of thing that that that that's that's interested we, we we've we've seen people come from all different aspects of of that of that you know we have people that were that have been teachers and K12 schools we have people that have been.
Higher education faculty or that work in higher education technology.
We've had artists, we've had musicians, we've had people that work in business and human resources, so it's a a field that really cuts across a lot of different things.
Some of the things that that that we do for sure is you know, we work with people that are educators and the people that administrate principles. Some of our people go on to become technology directors in K12 schools.
In addition, we have people in the training and instructional design fields and human resources and businesses and organizations. And recently in the last, I'd say decade, online learning has become a big part of.
Colleges and universities, and so there's a big aspect of this that ties into our teaching and higher education.
So some of the benefits of the program, we are in a fully online program so that it makes it very convenient for you to take our classes.
We were usually they're usually asynchronous, so it's not something where you have to be online at a certain time. So it allows us to sort of allow people to.
Come to the wondering at the times that they're there, are better for them, it's customized in a lot of ways and that the courses you can customize pretty much all the content.
To your specific needs. So in other words, if if you were an educator in AK-12 school, then you might focus on certain things within the class. But if you were working in business and industry, you might look at something different, but it'd be the same class. So if we were teaching you about technology tools, let's say for.
Uh, web communication then that would that would take different.
A different aspect of depending upon which which context you were in. And the other nice thing is that when you are allowed to use what you have available. So we're really about trying to make sure that you can apply it in your workspace. You know, if you're a K12 teacher, you might have one kind of system. If you're in higher education, it might be working with a different one and if you're in an organization might be doing it all totally different one. That's OK. Most of our courses don't require you to use a certain technology.
Um, we might ask you to use what you have available.
Our curriculum is 11 courses.
We have 5 core courses, and I'll show those to you at the end of the the presentation.
Uh, we have 6 elective courses that we allow you to to choose, and those are usually tied to your interest. So you know, depending upon where you're coming from, you might take certain courses.
If you're in K12 education, we do have some courses that count towards your supervisor endorsement. So if you're thinking about becoming a supervisor in K12 schools, then you might be able to to take some additional coursework in our Masters and I'm sorry that that's the wrong.
Which has the information you need for for for getting your supervisor endorsement and we also have a training and development certificate program which is 6 of the MIT courses that you would take.
And if you do that, then you can get a certificate that you can then use to show that you've completed these things, these courses and you have a specialty in that. And when you go looking for jobs or if you try to move up in your company you can you can show that as as a way of showing that that that you've learned these things.
In terms of our course offerings, we really focus on a couple of things. We focus on best practices, so we're really about what what's the best uses of technology to to do training and teaching. We talk about theories, we talk about learning theories and how people learn. We talk about motivational theories and and what what gets people to learn. We talk about strategies and techniques, very specific ways that you would use technology depending upon.
You're you're learning outcomes and goals that you want.
We talk about different tools and we are very big on hands on applications. So you would find that you would be able to to learn how to use the tools directly for the kinds of learning outcomes that you want.
Some of the things that people have done with this degree, uh alumni in education have become technology coordinators. We have quite a few people that were teachers of the year for their schools. We have several people that went on to become principals.
So that's certainly, it certainly gives you some mobility there. In higher education, we have people that become instructional designers, especially for online learning. People work with online learning.
Departments in in colleges and universities and we have some that they've even gone on to get their doctorate and become faculty, so.
So if you're a higher education person, or if you're looking to get into higher education.
This is a very good field to be in. And then in business and organizations we've had people that we are trained designers, trainers, human resources specialists. We've had people that went on to work at Lockheed and.
Booz Allen Hamilton and several different places as well as people work at smaller.
Companies or organizations and do a lot of work in the human resources and training.
All your courses are taught by full-time faculty members or highly qualified adjuncts. You know, people that we trust.
Right now there's there's three full-time faculty myself, Doctor Lee, who's in the first picture there? Doctor Ackman, who's in the second picture? She's the.
One in the colorful outfit.
Uh, and we we really pride ourselves on on on that. You get people that have been in this field for a while and then really know what's happened and what the changes have been, as well as what the latest practices are.
If you want to learn more, I'll show you our website or you can contact me directly either by e-mail or by phone if you want to do that. And let me just show you the website. This is the website for MIT.
This will explain more about the program. It explains what the curriculum is, what the courses are, and you can see what the the core courses are as well as the potential electives that you could do.
And any information on admissions and any any other questions. So I'm hoping that if you're interested you want to reach out and get in touch with with me and with Stockton and we'd very much like to have you join our join our group.
